landscaping idea
Is it time to upgrade your patio furnishings? Are those old wicker chairs and tables starting to fray? Is there discoloration on your patio furniture from the sun? Has less than desired weather like rain, hail or snow created warping and decreased the integrity of your tables and chairs? Are your throw pillows and cushions beat down from the weather as well? Or is your patio style just in need of a makeover in general?

Well, I came across a great article on HGTV.com offering four distinct ways you can give your outdoor living room a fresh, new weather resistant look that ties your indoor accents and extends them to your backyard entertainment space.

First up, the Contemporary look:
Sleek basic lines and a simple color palate can compliment newer architecture design as well as create an interesting contrast to older historical homes build with these same clean basic lines. They also suggest adding in contrasting color combinations to create a contemporary feel.

Secondly, go old world by going Mediterranean:
To achieve this, one must start with a warm color palate (think peach, orange, rose or rust) to evoke a feeling of warm and old classy style, and compliment with accents of green. Furniture is typically sturdy, some made of cast iron, pine, oak and tend to "feel" heavier than wicker based furniture. Throw pillows and cushions provide the final element and you can accent the living room with Mediterranean plants such as Rosemary and Lavender.

Third up, head east, far east and go Asian:
Asian design is primarily based around simplicity and tranquility. Simple, clean design is essential to achieving Asian design. Try to incorporate elements of nature into functional seating areas, benches and tables. Some of natures ingredients like tree stumps modified into benches, or stones used as seating or tables can be modified for functional use. HGTV suggests that Asian design is ideal for smaller outdoor entertainment spaces and not to forget about adding other natural elements to your space like a water feature or Asian Fire Bowl or Wok to really tie nature into your living space. Tiki torches are also a great way to achieve a fire feature while keeping the budget at a minimum.

Finally, the Traditional English Garden:
The English look is achieved by loading your outdoor space with an variety of flowers with textural variety surrounded by narrow walkways and hidden seating areas. These seating areas are usually very simple and rustic, such as a hard wood bench. you can antique the benches by applying a coat of stain to it to give it a weathered look.
